Shyam Bahadur Chepang had three children, two daughters and a son. All his children died within five days from last Friday to Tuesday morning. One of the children of Shyam Bahadur and Padam Kumari Chepang of Kulbang village near Hattibang in Ichchakamana Rural Municipality-1 in the northern hilly region of Chitwan died in the village and two in Bharatpur Hospital.
They had been experiencing symptoms of headache, vomiting, and diarrhea since Wednesday. Shyam Bahadur said that all five members of the family went to bed after eating corn rice and wild tangki greens on Tuesday evening. Locals and doctors suspect that they may have eaten wild mushrooms. Shyam Bahadur says that he ate wild mushrooms not immediately but 10 days before he fell ill. 'Bitter mushrooms are found in the forest. We always eat them.' This year, I ate very little only once. That was 10 days before the children fell ill,' said Shyam Bahadur.
Bharatpur Hospital spokesperson Dr. Ram Prasad Sapkota said that although the effects of wild mushroom poison seemed similar, further tests and investigations were underway as there were differences.
Among those who fell ill, the youngest daughter, 9-year-old Namuna Chepang, died in the village on Friday. The eldest daughter, 13-year-old Manita Chepang, and 11-year-old son Sajan were brought to Bharatpur Hospital for treatment by locals on Friday afternoon. Sajan died during treatment on Saturday night and Manita at 6 am on Tuesday, the hospital said.
Shyam Bahadur and his wife Padam Kumari are in normal condition. Shyam Bahadur is in Bharatpur Hospital for treatment of his children. Padam Kumari is in the village. The locals had brought the patient to Bharatpur for treatment in a Bolero vehicle used to transport goods from Hattibang. They had come to Bharatpur from Shaktikhor via Hattibang Banspur and then from Shaktikhor via the fishing road in about an hour and a half. Kulbang village can be reached on foot from Hattibang in about an hour and a half.
There are other incidents in Chitwan where families have lost their lives to wild mushrooms. In 2067, eight members of the same family from Lothar Kanda died after eating wild mushrooms. Even after that, five members of the family died due to wild mushrooms in Chowkidanda, Kabilas. Doctors say that if the mushrooms contain a poisonous substance called 'Amenita', the person who eats such mushrooms will die by affecting their liver, nervous system, blood and kidneys.
