Rajkumar Raut was arrested on April 30 from Kirnetar, Tamakoshi Rural Municipality-7, while fleeing after defrauding a businessman from Jiri Municipality of Rs 600,000 by promising to provide wholesale goods at a low price. During the investigation, it was revealed that he had been involved in fraud for almost two decades by promising to provide goods at a low price to small businessmen across the country.

During the investigation, it was revealed that he had changed his name and been defrauding small businessmen by claiming to be a court master of the Nepali Army and providing wholesale goods at affordable prices, said Dolakha Police Inspector Shriram Timalsina.

‘He said he was a court master of the army and would correct that he was providing goods at a low price in wholesale,’ said Timalsina, ‘He was trying to make small businessmen believe that they would also be greedy for profit, and it has been revealed that he was defrauding not only here but all over the country.’

He said that Raut was arrested while fleeing after taking Rs 600,000 from a businessman from Jiri to load goods in front of the Nepali Army camp in Charikot. He said that Raut of Surunga Municipality-3 in Saptari had been in prison for 4 years on charges of fraud and had been active in fraud again since 2076.

‘He used to lure small businessmen into various temptations and then abscond,’ he said. ‘It was only during the investigation that it was found out that the police were searching for Raut in many districts after he was arrested.’

He said that so far, it has been revealed that the police of Udayapur, Bhaktapur, Nuwakot, Kavrepalanchok, Sunsari, and Kathmandu are searching for him. He said that he used to get close to small businessmen in various ways, sometimes as an army court master, sometimes as a ration contractor, and lure them with the lure of profit.

Timalsina said that he used to cheat the police of various districts in a film style by giving ‘chakma’. It has been revealed that he used to deal with goods in the businessmen’s shops and then disappear after taking the money. Timalsina said that after his arrest, the cheated people from many districts have come in contact.

Currently, cases of criminal profiteering and criminal breach of trust have been filed against him in 6 districts. He said that since an investigation is underway to find out how many people have been cheated across the country, Raut has urged those who have been cheated to come in contact.

The Dolakha District Court has sent Raut to jail for remand.
