The major Nepal-China trade border, Tatopani Eco , has been blocked again due to a landslide, leaving uncertainty over its long-term solution.
Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming reached Tatopani on Sunday to monitor the area affected by the 'eco landslide', but no concrete plan for control has been made public.
The border has been completely closed for five days due to the landslide in the Liping area, causing a complete halt in imports. Businessmen say that the halt in containers carrying food, clothing and construction materials has affected supplies to the local market as well as the capital.
According to Sindhupalchowk Chief District Officer Ram Krishna Adhikari, Ambassador Zhang entered Nepal through Khasa and reached the site with a six-member team for an on-site inspection. The team observed the landslide area for about half an hour and prepared a report before returning. 'They have returned, the border is closed, but work is being started in earnest by the Charikot Road Division to operate the road,' he said.
However, local stakeholders complain that there is no clarity on when the Chinese company responsible for landslide control will be mobilized. According to them, long-term structural measures are needed to solve the problem that recurs every year with the onset of monsoon, but the work has not progressed.
