The Bagmati Province government has implemented new fares for public vehicles after the price of petroleum products increased. The province's Ministry of Labor, Employment and Transport published a notice in the province gazette, setting the new fares effective from Saturday (Chait 28). The meeting of the Fare Determination and Adjustment Committee under the province's Ministry of Labor, Employment and Transport on Friday had recommended an increase in the fares of vehicles operating throughout the province, including the Kathmandu Valley. The Bagmati Province government has adjusted the public fares as per the recommendation. The province government has implemented the new fares from Saturday after publishing the new fares in the province gazette. According to the new arrangement, the minimum fare for passenger public vehicles operating within the Kathmandu Valley has been set at Rs 24. Earlier, the fare for a distance of up to 5 kilometers was Rs 19, but it has been increased by Rs 5 to Rs 24.
Similarly, the fare has been fixed at Rs 33 for 10 kilometers, Rs 39 for 15 kilometers, Rs 44 for 20 kilometers and Rs 50 for more than 20 kilometers. The fare has also been increased in taxi services. According to the new arrangement, the 'flagdown' of taxis has been fixed at Rs 58 and the fare will be Rs 12 for every 200 meters.
Similarly, the previous fare has been increased by 17.35 percent for passenger public vehicles operating outside the valley. The fare of freight vehicles has been increased from Rs 14.80 per ton per kilometer to Rs 18.76.
The fare of electric vehicles has been kept unchanged. The provincial government has stated that the fare of public vehicles has been adjusted based on the change in the price of petroleum products. It has also been mentioned that if the price of petroleum products fluctuates by more than 5 percent, the fare will be adjusted accordingly.
The Ministry has stated that the new rates have been determined by reviewing the fares that were in effect since Bhadra 7, 2080 based on the Provincial Fare Determination and Adjustment Regulations, 2078 BS, market price fluctuations, and the prevailing economic act.
Discussions were also held with stakeholders before the fare adjustment. During that time, a team including President Rajendra Bikram Baniya and General Secretary Badri Prasad Chaulagain of the Federation of Nepal Truck Transport Entrepreneurs had reached the Ministry. They were of the opinion that the fare adjustment was necessary due to the increase in fuel prices, increase in operating expenses, and pressure on the transportation sector.
