Bharatpur Hospital has celebrated its 70th foundation day. This 600-bed government hospital has sufficient infrastructure to be converted into a medical college. But even after years of discussions about building a medical college, the project has not been implemented.
Most speakers at the foundation day program held on Wednesday emphasized that the hospital should be converted into a medical college. ‘Despite the ongoing discussions, the idea of building a medical college has failed. This hospital, which has all the infrastructure and human resources, may deteriorate if its management is not good. If the main party and leaders do not support it, this hospital will remain a hospital, not become a medical college,’ said Dr. Krishna Prasad Poudel, the hospital’s medical superintendent (MSU). Although a new MSU has been appointed in Dr. Poudel’s place, he has not yet come to the hospital.
The news that Dr. Vishwabandhu Baga was appointed as the new MSU of the hospital was made public a week ago. The anniversary celebration of the hospital, which has been established for 70 years and is located in the center of Nepal and has been treating many diseases, has been held in a very modest manner. In the last fiscal year, 431,595 patients visited the hospital's outpatient department (OPD).
The hospital administration has informed that up to 3,000 patients visit the OPD in a day. Similarly, 74,310 patients came for treatment in the emergency room in the last fiscal year. 26,000 patients were admitted and treated at the hospital. The hospital's bed occupancy rate is 93 percent, according to the annual report published by the hospital.
Bharatpur Hospital Development Committee Chairman Dr. Dhundiraj Poudel said that since medical service and education are complementary to each other, the hospital should be taken forward as an educational institution to increase the capacity of medical service. He said that legal arrangements should be made to operate this hospital as an educational institution. He said that a unique type of medical study institute can be established.
‘I request everyone to enact a law to establish a unique type of medical science institute without unnecessary expenses, inconvenience and financial burden,’ said Chairman Dr. Poudel. He emphasized that this hospital should be established as a national medical science institute instead of being dependent on other institutions.
Narayan Prasad Adhikari, Coordinator of the Chitwan District Development Coordination Committee, said that this hospital is the center of hope for patients not only in Chitwan but also in many neighboring districts. The progress report states that the hospital has been providing services to patients from at least 19 districts including Chitwan.
