A campaign to vaccinate teenage girls in Bhaktapur district with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) against cervical cancer has begun today.

District Public Health Office Chief Anjana Khadka said that the free HPV vaccination campaign has started in all four municipalities of the district from Monday. On Monday, Bagmati Province Health Minister Kiran Thapa launched the vaccination campaign from Araniko Secondary School in Suryabinayak Municipality-4, Bhaktapur.

He said that many women have suffered from cervical cancer and even lost their lives due to the lack of this vaccine. Last year, 198,000 girls studying in grades 6 to 10 were vaccinated against HPV, and the government has made arrangements to vaccinate girls studying in grade 6 every year.

Bagmati Province Health Ministry Secretary and Obstetrician Dr. Sumitra Gautam said that there is data that four people die every day due to cervical cancer in Nepal, and said that the government has launched a campaign to make the vaccination campaign successful.

She informed that 3,894 girls will be vaccinated in the vaccination campaign that will be conducted from today, February 26 to February 1 in Bhaktapur from 35 health institutions and vaccination centers and 80 schools.

In which, 3,894 girls studying in grade 6, 163 girls in the 10-year-old age group and 30 girls in the 7-10-year-old age group who were exempted last year will be vaccinated.

Khadka, the head of the District Public Health Center, said that since there is a vaccine storage center for other districts in Bhaktapur, it will be easy to add more vaccines even if more vaccines are needed than the collected details.

She informed that the office has made arrangements to provide HPV vaccination to girls who were exempted last year, who came from various areas such as Ittaba Bhatta and who are out of school during the campaign.
