As per the request of the District Administration Office, Makawanpur, to make the February 21 election peaceful and fearless, only 15 people have surrendered their licensed private weapons to the police as of Monday.
According to the District Police Makawanpur, 60 people across the district have obtained permission to possess weapons. Of those who have obtained permission, 45 are yet to surrender their weapons, said District Police Spokesperson DSP Pushkar Bogati.
The District Administration Office has stated that the weapons will be returned to the respective owners on Chaitra 20 after the election. Action will be taken against those who do not surrender their weapons within the stipulated time, DSP Bogati said. The District Administration Office Makawanpur had issued a public notice to surrender the weapons they have by the end of Magh.
Preparations are underway to mobilize around 4,000 security personnel and 2,121 election police in Makawanpur for election security.
The District Security Committee has placed 19 out of 167 polling stations on the 'highly sensitive' list based on security challenges. Some polling stations in Raksirang, Bakaiya and Bagmati rural municipalities in particular have been kept under increased surveillance from a security perspective.
Similarly, 60 polling stations are on the 'sensitive' list and 88 are on the general list. Makawanpur, which has two constituencies, has 167 polling stations and 374 polling stations. There are 315,334 voters in Makawanpur.
