The general public has felt relief after Manahari Rural Municipality of Makawanpur started providing funeral expenses to the families of the deceased. The expenses have brought relief to families who had difficulty in paying their funeral expenses after the death of a family member.

The municipality has started providing financial assistance of Rs 20,000 per family to poor families facing financial problems since the last fiscal year.

People's representatives have been visiting homes and handing over death registration documents along with financial assistance. Rural Municipality Chairman Ranjan Kalakheti said that the municipality has announced that it will provide funds to visit the homes of the deceased and perform the funeral rites, including in the policies and programs of the last fiscal year. He said that last year, 195 families were provided with money for funeral rites. He said that in the current fiscal year, 180 families have been provided with Rs 3.6 million for funeral rites.

Ward Chairman Rajkumar Pakhrin said that after the ward office recommends the poor along with the death certificate, the rural municipality office will provide Rs 20,000 in cash per family to perform the funeral rites. ‘We have been providing expenses so that the Kiriya does not stop due to financial shortage,’ he said, ‘This is the approved policy of the rural municipality.’ When going to provide the amount, condolences/tributes were written and fruits were also taken, said Ramesh Subedi, administrative officer of the rural municipality.

A budget of Rs 4 million has been allocated for Kiriya expenses in the current fiscal year. The rural municipality has stated that there is a provision to increase the budget if the amount is insufficient.
