Candidates urged to adopt financial transparency

What you should know

The Election Commission has urged candidates to adopt financial transparency. The Commission has urged them to avoid unnecessary expenses contrary to the election code of conduct and to conduct financial transactions only from transparent sources.

The commission has also warned of action if the code of conduct is violated. In an all-party discussion held at the office of the Election Officer of Kavre Constituency No. 1 on Wednesday, Kavre Chief Election Officer Prem Prasad Neupane urged people to be vigilant while conducting financial transactions.

He said that the Cyber Bureau and the Nepal Army are also closely studying the financial transactions being carried out by candidates and political parties through digital means. 'Candidates in elections should conduct their financial transactions transparently and with discipline,' Neupane said. Earlier, the code of conduct used to focus on raising awareness, but now, he warned that violating the code of conduct is a crime.

Kavre Chief District Officer Gopal Kumar Adhikari informed that since there have been reports of government employees violating the code of conduct in Kavre, employees have been warned to follow the code of conduct. Stating that the code of conduct is the backbone of the election, he urged the candidates to fully comply with it. In the program, Code of Conduct Monitoring Officer Rudra Koirala urged people to spend money in the election only by opening a bank account. Koirala, who gave a presentation on the financial aspects of the code of conduct, said that in Kavre district, there is a provision that a candidate can spend a maximum of 3.3 million rupees and warned them not to spend more than that and not to collect money from illegal sources.

Independent candidates participating in the discussion, especially candidates from big parties, complained that they have been working against the code of conduct by conducting door-to-door programs since now. There is a provision under the election program that programs such as door-to-door, corner meetings, and public meetings can be held only from Falgun 4. But they said that it has not been followed. They also urged that immediate action be taken against those violating the code of conduct and that the malpractice of buying voters during the silent period of the election should not be repeated this time.

In the House of Representatives elections to be held on Falgun 21, 42 candidates are in the fray, including 18 in Kavre's Constituency No. 1 and 24 in Constituency No. 2.
