A border security meeting was held on Sunday to discuss the smooth operation of the Tatopani border crossing connecting Nepal-China, border security, and facilitation in the context of the upcoming elections.
According to Sindhupalchowk Chief District Officer Ram Krishna Adhikari, important issues were discussed between both sides in a joint meeting on 'cross-border crime' and border security held at the administrative building in Zhangmu, China, across the Miteri Bridge.
In the meeting, it was agreed to work jointly to prevent unwanted and illegal activities in the border area during import and export.
In the discussion, priority was given to joint patrolling in the border area, border pillar protection, smuggling control, prevention of illegal movement and coordination related to border security. In addition, the issue of tourism and trade promotion, information exchange in disaster management and cooperation in the early warning system has also been raised.
The Chief District Officer said that necessary facilitation, security coordination and mutual information exchange in the border area were also discussed in view of the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives. "There were positive discussions on strengthening Nepal-China people-to-people relations, border security management, trade and tourism growth," he said.
Officials from the District Administration Office, Immigration, Security Agency, Customs Chief and others participated in the meeting from the Nepal side. On the Nepal side, the Chief District Officer, District Superintendent of Police Kazi Kumar Acharya, Sindhupalchowk Chief of National Investigation Subhash Karki and Armed Police Force SP Achyut Kumar Majgaiya, representatives from the Tatopani Immigration Office participated. On the Chinese side, high-ranking officials from Nyalam County Administration, Immigration and Security Agency, representatives at the SSP, SP and DSP levels, participated.
During the discussion, the Nepal side had urged to give special priority to exports, increase the number of containers targeting festivals and make the mechanism for rapid information exchange during disasters effective.
The administration stated that the meeting was held in an atmosphere of mutual goodwill and coordination. The Khasa Smart City is currently under reconstruction, and earlier, a massive forest fire in the Khasa and Nyalam region of China had disrupted the reconstruction and the border crossing.
The Chinese side has informed that the border crossing could not be opened because the customs system on the Chinese side was not operational due to the fire on Sunday. The Chinese administration has been informing Nepal that the border crossing operation is impossible after the fire.
An electrical transmitter exploded in the Khasa area, causing a forest fire. It is reported that residents of Khasa and Ramite surrounding areas have been shifted to safer places after the fire spread through the dense forest.
