The 263rd Victory Day was celebrated on Saturday amidst a ceremony at the historic Makawanpur Gadhi located in Makawanpurgadhi Rural Municipality-2. Bagmati Province's Minister for Internal Affairs and Law, Shivraj Adhikari, inaugurated the Victory Day by hoisting the flag.
The victory festival is celebrated to celebrate the victory over a foreign army. Makwanpurgadhi, located 16 kilometers east of Buddha Chowk in Hetauda, is the former Sen dynasty palace and is also the in-laws of Prithvi Narayan Shah.
A statue of a one-tusked white elephant ridden by King Hemkarna Sen has been built in Makwanpurgadhi, while there are also statues of Prithvi Narayan Shah and Kanak Singh Baniya. Hemkarna Sen had given the white elephant as dowry to his son-in-law Prithvi Narayan Shah, but his brother-in-law Digbandhan Sen did not give the elephant to Shah, resulting in a rift between the two brothers-in-law. The elephant died there. A statue of a white elephant was built in the place where the elephant died.
After losing the battle of Hariharpur Gadhi under the Makwanpurgadhi, Digbandhan Sen, the last king of the Sen dynasty, went to seek help from the Nawab of Bengal, Mir Kasim Ali. With the help of Nawab Ali, 3,000 troops, including 2,000 fighters and 1,000 garrisons, attacked the Gorkha-controlled Makwanpurgadhi on Magh 10, 1819.
Mir Kasim's army was defeated on Magh 10 by the army led by Nandu Shah at Makwanpurgadhi and the army of Banshiraj Pandey sent by Prithvi Narayan Shah from Dahachowk. The Vijay Utsav has been celebrated for the past decade to commemorate the victory over the foreign army.
‘If we had not been able to defeat the foreign forces that came from Bengal, not only would the campaign for Nepal unification not only have been set back, we would not have been able to achieve the present Nepal,’ said the chief guest and Minister of Internal Affairs Adhikari, ‘This is the place where Nepali bravery was demonstrated by defeating the foreign forces.’
After the defeat of Mir Qasim’s army by the Nepali army, Prithvi Narayan Shah had started the practice of building a military organization structure to protect the nation by organizing the modern weapons and military enthusiasm that were taken away from them. Prithvi Narayan Shah had formed the Srinath Gana, Sabuj Gana, Old Gorakh Gana, Barda Bahadur Gana and Kalibaks Gana at that time. Those ganas still exist. The history of the Nepali Army has a historical background of the bravery of Makwanpur fort.
King Mukunda Sen of Palpa had divided the kingdom among his four sons. The youngest son of Makwanpur Sen was in the share of Luhang. History mentions that Luhang built Makawanpurgadhi in Bikram Sambat 1622 to secure his kingdom. Makawanpurgadhi is the largest fort in Nepal. A 25-foot high and 7-foot wide wall has been built around the fort to protect it.
The rural municipality, provincial government, Nepali Army and locals are now working together to protect the historic Makawanpurgadhi, which has a history of bravery. Makawanpur Gadhi Rural Municipality-2 Ward Chairman Bakhan Singh Pakhrin chaired the victory celebration program, which was attended by Makawanpur Gadhi Rural Municipality Chairman Dorje Lama, Bhimphedi Rural Municipality Chairman Hidam Lama, and Nepal Army Gorakh Bahadur Battalion Commander Nirajan Dhami. The government has also listed Makawanpurgadhi among the 100 important destinations. The fort is located at an altitude of 1,017 meters.
