Tika Kumari Neupane, 92, of Piluwa, Simara Municipality-16, Bara, and Patalimaya Chepang, 80, of Dandatar, Raksirang Rural Municipality-9, Makawanpur, are amazed to regain their sight after four years.

Tika Kumari and Patalimaya, who had been in darkness for four years after losing their sight, have regained their sight after cataract surgery.

Tika Kumari, who lives in Makawanpur's Hadikhola Maiti Ghar, is happy to be able to go inside and outside without assistance. Patalimaya told everyone in the hospital that she can now work in the fields around her house after regaining her sight. 'I am excited and energetic after regaining my sight. It is a great thing to see the world with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren,' said Tika Kumari. As soon as Dr. Sunil Thakali of Hetauda Community Eye Hospital removed the blindfold, he saw his youngest son in front of him. Suddenly, she cried out in a loud voice, 'My son will be able to see his eyes.' When she removed the blindfold, her children and daughters-in-law were around her.

Tika Kumari and Patalimaya have been living without sight for four years. It seemed to both of them that they would always be in darkness day and night. After removing the blindfold, both of them said with a smile, ‘The God-like doctor has shown us our eyes, now we will not have any problem walking around and doing farm work.’

Tika Kumari from Bara Piluwa and Patalimaya from a remote village in Makwanpur were brought to Hetauda Community Eye Hospital on Thursday to undergo cataract surgery on both eyes. On Thursday, 85 people, including Tika Kumari and Patalimaya, underwent cataract surgery.

These two are the only ones who have undergone cataract surgery on both eyes. Doctors from the eye hospital had organized free eye camps in various rural areas of Bara, Parsa, Rautahat and Makawanpur districts and identified cataract patients.

The free eye camp, jointly organized by Rotary Club Midtown Kathmandu, Rotary Club Hetauda and Community Eye Hospital, examined 1,133 people in various locations in four districts, and 150 were found to have cataracts. Dr. Thakali said that free cataract surgeries are being conducted along with the management of food for the patients and the doctors.
