In the nomination registration held on Tuesday for the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 21, only 18 of the 60 candidates in three constituencies in Chitwan were women.
The number of female voters in Chitwan is high, but women do not even make up one-third of the candidates. Withdrawal of candidacies and investigation of complaints are still pending and the final list is prepared.
According to the Chitwan District Election Office, the total number of voters in the district is 442,082. Of which 224,766 are women and 217,314 are men. Similarly, there are two other voters. On Tuesday, a total of 60 candidates registered their nominations, including 19 in Chitwan-1, 23 in Chitwan-2, and 18 in Chitwan-3.
Of those registered, only two in Chitwan-1, seven in Chitwan-2, and nine in Chitwan-3, a total of 18 are women, according to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer and Election Officer. In Chitwan-1, the National Jan Morcha (Rajmo) has fielded Sita Devi Chhetri and the National Republic Nepal (NRN) has fielded Ishwari Gurung.
In Chitwan-2, the Nepali Congress has fielded Mina Kumari Kharel. Similarly, the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) has fielded Dirshana Kumari Shahi, the Mongol National Organization has fielded Risha Gole, the Aam Janata Party has fielded Devi Kumari Magar, the Rastriya Jan Morcha has fielded Devi Sharma, the Janmata Party has fielded Nirmala Kumari Thakur, and the Nepal Mazdoor Kisan Party has fielded Shobha Vasukala. Out of the total 23 candidates, seven are women.
The constituency with the highest number of women candidates is Chitwan-3. Here, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has fielded Renu Dahal and the National Independent Party (NRP) has fielded Sobita Gautam. Women have registered their candidacies from both the main parties and other parties as well as independently. Out of the total 18 candidates, half, or nine, are women in Chitwan-3. Four of the nine women have filed as independent candidates.
Nepal Workers and Peasants Party has fielded Badri Lakshmi Kawa. National Republic has fielded Setimaya Tamang and Nagarik Unmukti Party has fielded Harimaya Maharjan. Similarly, the independent candidates registered include Indramaya Poudel, Ranjana Poudel, Parvati Poudel Kafle and Madhumaya Adhikari, according to the Office of the Returning Officer, Chitwan-3.
