House of Representatives election: UML recommends 6 candidates in Chitwan-1

What you should know

CPN (UML) Chitwan Constituency No. 1 has recommended the names of six people for the upcoming House of Representatives elections.

The meeting of the regional committee held on Sunday recommended the names of former Bagmati Province Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Dawa Dorje Lama, District Chairman Kamal Raj Pathak, Provincial Committee members Laxmi Koirala Pokharel, Dr. Kishore Khanal, Bharat Bhandari and Krishnalal Chaudhary to the district committee, informed the regional coordinator Premnath Duwadi.

The name of former Finance Minister and influential UML leader Surendra Pandey, who was defeated in the previous election, has not been recommended by the regional committee. According to regional coordinator Duwadi, the name of leader Pandey has not been sent to the district committee because he has not applied for candidacy.

Leader Pandey, however, responded that he was not aware of the fact that his name was not recommended. He told Kantipur over the phone, ‘I am currently in Nepalgunj, I have no information about the fact that my name was not recommended, and no one even told me to apply.’

Although Constituency No. 1 recommended its name, Constituency No. 2 and 3, UML Chitwan Secretary Prakash Dhungana informed that the names will be recommended on Poush 22. Secretary Dhungana said that the final name will be recommended to the Provincial Committee in the district committee meeting held immediately after that.

Secretary Dhungana said that the district committee will take a further decision on the matter of the regional committee not recommending the name of leader Pandey, who was elected twice from Chitwan Constituency No. 1. Secretary Dhungana said that if leader Pandey expressed his desire, the district committee can add his name and send it to the provincial committee. 'When we contacted him, he was from Nepalgunj, we will sit and discuss with him, understand his opinion,' Secretary Dhungana said, 'If he expressed his desire, there is no objection to sending his name by adding it.'

Leader Pandey became an MP in the first Constituent Assembly through the proportional system and was elected from Chitwan Constituency No. 1 in the 2070 and 2074 elections. He was defeated by National Independent Party (NISP) leader Hari Dhakal in the 2079 BS House of Representatives elections.
