An agricultural produce collection, processing, drying, and sales center has come into operation in Tripurasundari Rural Municipality.
The center, which was built with the aim of facilitating the collection, processing, storage and moisture management of agricultural produce, has been put into operation.
The Food and Nutrition Security Improvement Project Cluster Unit, Sindhupalchowk and Tripurasundari Rural Municipality under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development of the federal government, has put the center into operation at a cost of Rs 3.691 million. According to Om Tamang, Head of Tripurasundari Industry Development Branch, the center's building was constructed by the Damside Farmers Group.
On Thursday, Rural Municipality Chairman Bhaktadhwaj Bohara inaugurated the center. The rural municipality has received Rs 1.3 million and the project has provided Rs 1.4 million for the construction of the moisture center. In addition, a state-of-the-art cooling chamber machine worth about Rs 600,000 has been installed. Locals donated Rs 391,000 for the construction of the building.
An agricultural ambulance service has also been brought into operation in the rural municipality with the aim of purchasing farmers' produce in cash and transporting it to the market. The Tripurasundari Farmers' Group Association, which has been operating an agricultural produce sales booth at Khadichaur Bazaar in Balefi Rural Municipality-7, has been coordinating with the municipality to start an ambulance service to prevent farmers' produce from going to waste.
Agricultural and animal products including vegetables, fish, honey, meat, yogurt, and chhurpi produced throughout the municipality are being collected and delivered to the sales booth by ambulance. More than 30 to 50 farmers' produce reaches the sales booth daily.
Once the moisture center comes into operation, it is expected that local farmers will be able to collect, store, process, and manage their produce from one place. It is believed that this will help reduce the loss of agricultural produce, increase value addition, and increase farmers' income.
According to project representatives, the center will also contribute to food and nutrition security by making the local agricultural system systematic.
Farmers from nearby local levels have also benefited from the sales room and humidity center at Bahrabise-Lamosanghu Bazaar, the destination of the route to Dolakha, Ramechhap and Tatopani. ‘The hope of getting a fair price by keeping perishable agricultural produce and products safe for a long time has been awakened, this has been our dream for years,’ said Ishwari Maya Shrestha of Tripurasundari-6.
Targeting the youth who have migrated abroad, the municipality has also launched the Agriculture Save and Youth Return Campaign and prepared policies and procedures for expanding farming and marketing on barren land, said the rural municipality chairperson Bohara.
