What you should know

Twenty women have left Kathmandu for the Paldor mountain range for a 'Mountain Leadership' training organized with the aim of promoting adventure tourism in the enchanting mountain ranges near the valley.

According to Maya Gurung, former president of the Global Inclusive Adventure (GIA) and mountaineer, the participating women aged 16 to 38 have been active in the peak climbing journey since Thursday.

‘They left Kathmandu on Wednesday and are now on an uphill journey on the tourist trekking route via Gatlang. During the journey, they are identifying and practicing the mountain route and are moving towards the old route of Paldor Peak,’ she said.

The team of 20 people selected for the mountain leadership training from the organization’s Female Leadership Academy includes 16 teenagers, assistants and trainers.

The climbing and training of the 5,896-meter-high Paldor Peak, located near the Ganesh Himalayas in Gorkha, will last for two weeks. Paldor Himal is located in the Ganesh Himal and its geographical location is near the confluence of three districts of Gorkha-Dhading-Rasuwa. In this training, participants will learn basic to advanced mountaineering skills.

Famous Everest mountaineers Furaduki Sherpa, Karma Sherpa and other instructors will provide practical training on trekking map study, map navigation, first aid, necessary equipment and preparation for mountain travel. According to the organizer, such training and trips are organized with the aim of expanding adventure tourism in the mountains near Kathmandu, including Jugal, Semisidang, Dorjelakpa in Sindhupalchowk, Langtang in Rasuwa, and Gaurishankar Himal in Dolakha.

Girls and young women from various districts of the country including Sindhupalchowk are participating in the training. The 'Mountain Leadership' program, launched with the aim of empowering women's leadership in the mountains, is expected to further enhance women's confidence, skills, and leadership abilities in the mountaineering sector.

From the lap of Paldor Himal, one can also enjoy the magnificent views of the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Langtang mountain ranges.
