Disabled woman performs daring bungee jump from wheelchair

A disabled woman has created new history in the field of adventure sports by bungee jumping in a wheelchair. Deepa Devkota, a resident of Kamalamai Municipality-4, Sindhuli, bungee jumped from a new 160-meter-high bridge between Marming and Listikot in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality on Tuesday.

After completing the bungee jump, which is considered the third most natural adventure sport in Asia, Devkota said that it felt like she had ‘conquered death’. She also said that this daring effort, which was made on the occasion of her birthday, sent a strong message of courage, confidence and inclusiveness.

‘Disability is not a weakness,’ she said, ‘If given self-confidence and opportunities, people with disabilities can also establish themselves competently in all fields. I hope that this effort will instill confidence in my sisters and brothers with disabilities.’

Despite having a physical disability due to spinal bifida, Devkota’s bold step has challenged the negative perceptions prevalent in society. She is also a disability rights activist.

Devkota is a federal member of the National Disabled Federation of Nepal and the president of the Sindhuli Disabled Women’s Association. Her effort has set an example that people with disabilities are also capable of participating equally in all activities of society, community and nation.
