The work of 'rectofitting' and 'jacketing' on the pillars of the bridge over the Rapti River in Hetauda on the East-West Highway has been completed.

The work of ‘rectofitting’ and ‘jacketing’ of the four pillars of the bridge was completed on Sunday. Yadav Subedi, engineer and information officer of the Division Road Office, Hetauda, said that the work was completed in 11 days with 12 workers including technicians deployed for the work.

The work of ‘rectofitting’ and ‘jacketing’ of the four pillars damaged by the flood had started on November 17. Based on the report submitted to the Road Department by the team of bridge expert Shiva Poudel after the study of the pillars, the work of ‘rectofitting’ and ‘jacketing’ of the four pillars was started, said Guru Prasad Adhikari, chief of the Division Road Office, Hetauda.

The flood flow of the Rapti River during the rainy season has been pushing the pillars. Due to which the cement of the pillars was washed away and iron rods were visible. Engineer Niraj Maharjan said that the pillars will be safe after applying cement 'jacketing' to the places where the iron rods were visible.

The 210-meter-long bridge has seven pillars. Of these, the iron of four pillars was visible outside. The access road to Hetauda of the bridge, which was built by an Indian company 43 years ago, was washed away by a flood in 2059 BS. The bridge had not been repaired since its construction.

More than 10,000 vehicles travel through the bridge, located between wards 10 and 11 of Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City, daily. Before the bridge was built, a causeway was built on the Rapti River.
