Poultry farmers have said that the cost of production of eggs has increased. The Nepal Poultry Farmers Forum has informed that the cost of each egg is 19 rupees and 12 paise.

Poultry farmers have said that the cost of production of eggs has increased. The Nepal Poultry Farmers Forum has informed that the cost of eggs per egg will be Rs 19.12. The forum's meeting held on Asoj 23 had formed a team of professors from the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) to determine the cost price. 'We had formed an expert committee under the coordination of AFU professor Dr. Rewant Kumar Bhattarai, with Associate Professor Dr. Anil Kumar Tiwari, Dr. Bishnu Hari Sharma and Member Secretary Associate Professor Ananta Dahal,' said Raghunath Bhatta, Chairman of the Nepal Poultry Farmers Forum. Two years ago, a similar committee formed by the forum had fixed the cost price of eggs at Rs 16.56 per egg. Chairman Bhatta said that the committee was formed to determine the new cost price after egg producers complained that they were not getting the cost price. He said that experts have recommended a new price after analyzing the market price, egg production conditions, labor wages, electricity, medicine, vaccines and other materials. Currently, eggs are being sold according to the old cost price. Chairman Bhatta said that since consumers currently have to pay 24/25 rupees for an egg depending on the location, a new cost price has to be established.

Consumer rights activist advocate Jyoti Baniya said that business associations cannot set prices and that there are certain rules, bodies and methods to establish cost prices, and they should be followed. 'If there is a problem with the cost price, there is a rule to request the government and fix it in a procedural way,' Baniya said.

Chairman Bhatta said that the new cost price was approved after discussing with all the stakeholders in the district. 'We have discussed with the government, non-government and business associations in the district,' he said. He said that the new cost price was made public after all the stakeholders agreed in the discussion. ‘We will also send the new price and related documents to the provincial and federal government bodies. If it is considered appropriate, it will be accepted,’ said Bhatta.

He said that if there are any mistakes or shortcomings in the cost price, the government bodies should correct them, otherwise they should support it. ‘There is no price according to the cost of production.’ Business has already declined. Poultry farmers are suffering from bank loans. The rate of displacement from the business has increased,’ said Bhatta, chairman of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum.

Ananta Dahal, member secretary of the cost price determination committee, informed that the cost price was calculated by adding up all the expenses incurred in raising 10,000 chickens, producing eggs and transporting them to the market. Dahal said that the cost price was determined after studying all the factors such as not all the chickens raised, even the survivors not laying 100% eggs, and losses.
