Health Minister Dr. Sudha Gautam inaugurated the trauma center established at Bharatpur Hospital on Sunday. The hospital used its own income, not from the federal budget, to establish the trauma center.

The hospital's Medical Superintendent (MESU) Dr. Krishna Prasad Poudel informed that the hospital has invested Rs 130 million for the trauma center. Health Minister Dr. Gautam's career started from Bharatpur Hospital. 'This hospital is the hospital where I started my working life. While working here, my husband and I had demanded that a trauma center be built here. At that time, there was no trauma center in Kathmandu either. The trauma center that had been demanded since then has now been built and I got the opportunity to inaugurate it,' she said.

She said that a trauma center was necessary to treat injuries including accidents. 'Why did we demand such a center even then? Chitwan is a place surrounded by the highway. Accidents happen here. That's why a trauma center is needed! At that time, wherever a bus broke down, patients would come here. They were treated by lying on the ground. No matter how much they spent,' said Minister Dr. Gautam.

She said that even though the matter reached the palace at that time, a trauma center was not built. Dr. Gautam was working as a medical officer at Bharatpur Hospital in 2040 BS. Dr. Poudel, a medic at Bharatpur Hospital, informed that the trauma center, which was to be operated with 50 beds within three to four months, has now started with 15 beds. There are also two well-organized operating rooms (OTs).

‘The practice of mistaking accident patients with other patients and keeping them in the emergency room for treatment will now be eliminated. Accident victims will be managed well and treatment will begin. Since treatment is faster, the death rate of the injured will definitely decrease,’ said Dr. Poudel.

He said that the trauma center will also have an OT along with an X-ray room and a doctor. He said that it will be possible to start surgery immediately if necessary. ‘At least six accident victims come every day. This number will increase further after a separate trauma center is ready,’ said Dr. Poudel.

He said that Rs 110 million has been spent on the building of the trauma center. Similarly, equipment worth Rs 1.5 crore has arrived and another Rs 1 crore worth of goods are in the process of arriving, he said. He said this is the second trauma center after Kathmandu. ‘This is not a trauma center established under the budget of the Ministry of Health. The Hospital Development Committee has decided to build a trauma center at Bharatpur Hospital by spending it from its own funds. This is our first big project,’ said Mesu Poudel.

He said that it will now be easier to take accident patients from surgery to post-surgery, without keeping them with others.
