Local border residents have been protesting since Saturday, saying that the relevant bodies have been ignoring the ongoing floods and landslides in the Kodari section connecting Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-2 with China, which have increased the risk to roads and settlements.

Despite repeated calls to the effect that various parts of the road have been narrowing due to floods and landslides in recent months, local victims have started a movement by completely blocking traffic in the eco-zone. As the Kodari section gradually began to sink, about 70 households in areas including Chowki Danda, Milan Bazaar, Lalbir Chowk, Kodari Gumba, Kudung, Takpasa, Tartung, Kyusa, Chermang, Damar and Tamang Gumba are at high risk .

'The poor condition of the road has been the same for years. The upper part has been at risk. We have had to live in fear and panic,' said local Sete Sherpa.

The road has been submerged at various places on the 26-kilometer-long Kodari Highway due to incessant rains, making travel risky throughout the monsoon. Dozens of containers that left China for customs procedures have been stopped in Liping after locals blocked the highway in the eco-zone.

In a letter submitted by the victims to Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, Tatopani Customs Office, Area Police Office Kodari, Armed Security Base, Customs Security and Assistant District Administration Office Charikot, among other agencies, it is mentioned that the main problems are the narrowing of the highway, the high-risk situation of the settlement, and the government's indifference in preventing landslides. Locals say that the village is at complete risk as there has been no progress in implementing measures despite the arrival of a technical team for risk assessment.

The victims' committee claims that they have been forced to organize themselves after there has been no direct initiative to solve the problem even after the rainy season is over. The victims' committee has demanded immediate security arrangements in the risk area, measures to control landslides, coordination for the protection of the highway and settlement, and implementation of commitments made in the past by the concerned bodies.

Locals and travelers are disappointed after the Baseri-Liping road, which was repaired and blacktopped at a cost of billions, is returned to its original condition.
