The Indrayani Mai fair has begun in Thaha Municipality-3, located in the northern part of Makawanpur, from Thursday. The Indrayani Mai fair, which takes place every three years, is held for three days.
The fair is held at the Indrayani Mai Chaur from the day of Mangsir Purnima. The fair is held at the Indrayani Mai Chaur in the middle of Daman Palung. On the first day of the fair, five chariots including Ganesh, Kumari, Indrani, and Kalbhairav are carried by the Newar and Deula communities of Palung, Shikharkot, along with musical instruments. In the past, only men used to carry the chariot. For a few years, women have also carried the Kumari chariot and taken it to the Indrayani Mai Chaur.
On the second day, it is customary for the residents of the Palung Valley and the area to sacrifice more than two thousand animals and birds, including goats, cows, and roosters. The fair ends on the third day when the chariots are returned. The priest of the Indrayani Mai temple is a Deula. The Deula and Newar communities, especially those from Palung, who have migrated for employment and migration, return to their villages for the Indrayani Mai fair.
This fair is a historical fair in the northern region of Makawanpur. The statue of Indrayani Mai was stolen about 5 decades ago. It has not been found yet. After the historical statue was stolen, another statue was brought and worshipped, said local resident Shyam Bhakta Shrestha.
