Thaha Municipality of Makawanpur has declared a public holiday on Friday on the occasion of the triennial Indrayani Jatra.
Spokesperson Hirendra Kumar Rayamajhi said that the meeting of the municipal executive on 30 Kartik decided to declare a public holiday throughout the city on the second day of the three-day festival. The federal government has declared a public holiday on Thursday for the Udhauli festival, while the 20th falls on Saturday. Thus, the residents of Thaha will be able to celebrate all three days.
The fair has been held at Indrayani Chaur in Thaha Municipality for about 350 years. This is the oldest and most historical fair among the fairs held in the former Daman and Palung VDCs. Shyam Bhakta Shrestha, chairman of the Indrayani Bhagwati Kalabhairav Guthi Conservation Committee, informed that the preparations according to the rituals have been completed for the Indrayani Jatra, which is directly linked to the Newar and Deula communities culturally.
An empty chariot has been brought from Palung Deula village (Indrayani Basti) for the jatra. The three-year jatra is celebrated according to Tantric rituals. Four days before the start of the Jatra, i.e. on the 12th day of the full moon day of Mangsir, an empty chariot is brought from Deula Tola to the Newar settlement of Palung. It is customary for a Newar community member to carry the chariot from Palung.
On the occasion of the Jatra, chariot rides of Indrayani, Kumari, Kalabhairav and Ganesh are performed.
