A body kept for funeral preparations has been swept away after the Indus Hydropower Distribution Center in Lamosanghu, Sindhupalchowk, accidentally opened a dam.

According to Ramesh Bohara, ward chairman of Tripurasundari Rural Municipality-6, while the mourners were making final preparations for the funeral at Balka Ghat by arranging firewood, the dam gate was suddenly opened.

After the death of local Ratna Bahadur Bohara, a large number of mourners and local people were present at the Ghat. "Suddenly, the river overflowed and everyone scattered. We reached the bank after saving our lives, but we have received information that the pyre and body were washed away and where they were, they were found in the dark," said ward chairman Bohara. The locals had immediately started searching for the channel where the body had been washed away.

The locals are angry after the high-speed water from the dam swept away the body along with the pyre in a few moments. The victim has expressed strong dissatisfaction, saying that the honor of the deceased was hurt due to negligence in opening the dam without prior notice. After the incident, there was an argument between the locals and the employees who reached the hydroelectric power station to get information.

‘This is not the first incident, locals have been facing problems repeatedly due to the indiscriminate opening of the dam. The same issue is still being discussed,’ said Bohara. Locals say that the leadership vacancy following the transfer of Distribution Center Chief Deepak Sapkota has also complicated the discussions.

After the incident, locals have warned of strong protests and even lockouts if the center does not clearly admit its mistake and come up with solutions. Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation into the incident. The hydropower side, however, has responded by saying that they are looking into the internal reasons for the sudden opening of the dam.
