Repair work has begun on the pillars of the bridge built 43 years ago over the Rapti River in Hetauda on the East-West Highway.

The Division Road Office, Hetauda, has started retrofitting four pillars from Wednesday. Office engineer Niraj Maharjan said that the pillars damaged by the flood will be repaired.

A team of expert Shiva Poudel arrived in Hetauda on Wednesday for retrofitting and bridge studies. Office chief Guruprasad Adhikari said that the work has already started after the team's study. During the rainy season, the high flow of the flood has been pushing the pillars hard. Due to which the cement on the outer part of the pillars has been washed away and iron rods have been seen.

Information Officer Yadav Subedi said that the pillars will be safe after being coated with cement by hitting the firm on the pillars where the rods are visible.

The 210-meter-long bridge has seven pillars. Of these, the rods of four are visible outside. The access road to Hetauda of the bridge, built by an Indian company 43 years ago, was washed away by a flood in 2059 BS. No repair work has been done on the bridge since its construction. The bridge is located between Wards 10 and 11 of Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City. The bridge has seven spans. More than 10,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily.
