Statistics show that there has been a decrease in domestic violence incidents in Kavre in recent times. This is according to five-year statistics from the District Police Office.
Between 2077/78 and 2081/082, the number of incidents increased in 2078/79, but the number decreased in 2081/82, informed Deputy Superintendent of Police Rabin Bista, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Kavre. In 2077/78, 172 cases were registered in the office. 159 cases were settled and the remaining 13 were sent to the courts.
In 2078/79, out of 276 cases registered, 267 were settled at the police office and 9 were sent to the courts. Similarly, domestic violence seems to have decreased in 2079/80. Out of 186 cases registered in that year, all were settled at the police office. In 2080/81, all 183 cases registered were settled at the police office.
In 2081/82, 144 cases were registered, and 3 were sent to courts, according to the details available from the office.
The impact of awareness campaigns conducted at different times, the idea of equality between men and women, and economic empowerment are the reasons for the decrease in domestic violence, said Chief Superintendent of Police Komal Shah of the District Police Office, Kavre.
Human rights activist Krishna Pyari Nakarmi says that the decrease in violence may be due to the fact that justice is administered at the local level and problems are resolved through mediators formed at the local level.
Incidents of violence through technology are increasing
Although there is a decrease in incidents of domestic violence, incidents through the use of technology (through social media) seem to have increased. According to Information Officer Rabin Bista, incidents of violence through social media have been registered.
In 2081/82, the office's details mention that 59 victims, including 22 women and 37 men, were victims of the use of social media. From Shrawan to Kartik of 2082/83, 49 victims, including 19 women and 30 men, have been reported.
The police say that the most cases of violence through social media occurred through the e-Sewa app.
