The Birgunj branch office of the Department of Medicines Management has conducted inspections at 20 medicine shops in Chitwan on Thursday and Friday.
During the monitoring of 8 hospital and 12 other drug stores, one of them was found to be selling and distributing drugs by an unauthorized person, said Shambhu Shah, head of the Birgunj branch office of the department. Some or the other weaknesses have been found in most drug stores.
Inspector of the department Ravi Chaudhary Tharu said that 15 drug stores did not keep proper records of narcotic and psychotropic drugs. Similarly, Chaudhary informed that seven other drug stores outside the hospital also kept 6 types of antibiotics that can only be sold by the hospital pharmacy. Pharmacists were absent in two drug stores.
'Most drug stores were found to have medicinal food supplements. These are registered with the Food Department and not with the Food and Drug Administration Department.' "Therefore, only medicines registered with the Department of Drug Management should be kept in pharmacies," said Inspector Chaudhary.
