A waiting house has been built for pregnant women coming to give birth at a health post with a birthing center in a remote village in Makawanpur.

A separate building has been constructed at the health post to provide food and accommodation to pregnant women coming from distant settlements to give birth.

Lok Bahadur Moktan, the village council chairman, inaugurated the waiting building at the Ngiko (our) health post in Kailash Rural Municipality-7 on Friday. Chairman Moktan said that a house with food and accommodation facilities has been constructed for the safety of pregnant women, mothers and newborns.

Former Miss Nepal Shrinkhala Khatiwada had built a health post with a birthing center in Tamlang, which is in the former Bharata VDC (currently Kailash Rural Municipality-7), with personal investment in 2076 BS. The name of the health post is also named ‘Ngiko’ health post in the Chepang language.

In the Chepang language, ‘Ngiko’ means ours. After the birthing center was established, the number of women giving birth at the health post has increased, said Menka Thakur, head of the health post. “Since the birthing center was not established in Tamlang, most pregnant women used to give birth at home in an unsafe manner, relying on the help of a midwife. Now, people have started coming to the health post,” she said.

She said that after the construction of this building at the birthing center, it will be easier to call pregnant women from far away a few days before the scheduled time. Ward chairman Udas Kumar Bholan said that the building was built with food and accommodation facilities for the pregnant woman and the midwife.

14 people from the settlement, which is dominated by the Chepang community, had sought delivery services at this health post in the last fiscal year. This number is only about 40 percent of the pregnant women in the village. About 60 percent of pregnant women here give birth at home in an unsafe manner. Health post chief Thakur said that after labor pains, they first use a birthing center and only when complications arise, they bring the health post.

The building was constructed at a cost of about 700,000 rupees under the annual program of the last fiscal year under a special grant from the Bagmati Province government. Kiran Shrestha, head of the Public Health Office, Makawanpur, said that such waiting houses have been constructed in geographically remote places.

Out of the 10 wards of Kailash Rural Municipality, which is dominated by the Chepang community, there are no birthing centers in wards 6 and 10. Tilak Gautam, head of the health branch of the municipality, said that there are birthing centers in the health posts of the other 8 wards. According to him, it was estimated that 358 people would become pregnant in Kailash Rural Municipality in the last fiscal year. He said that 171 of them came to the health institution and gave birth. Village head Moktan said that the municipality has been investing in the health sector with the aim of reducing home deliveries to zero.
