A 75-year-old man has shot and killed a village priest after accusing him of stabbing and killing four villagers, including his grandson.

Police said that 75-year-old Iman Singh Thokar of Kolgairi Thakuridanda, Raksirang Rural Municipality-1, shot and killed 64-year-old Dhami Thule Gole on Friday. He had shot him in the chest.

He has stated that he killed Dhami because he had stabbed his grandson (the 5-year-old son of his youngest son) four years ago and also killed three neighbors.

When he left home carrying a pistol and put it in his pocket at Jwarikot, his younger daughter Amruta asked him, 'Why are you carrying a pistol?' Thokar walked away without giving any answer.

Police say that superstition motivated him to commit the murder. Even now, he does not show much remorse for the shooting and killing, said Raju Kurmi, Inspector and Acting Information Officer of the District Police Office, Makawanpur. Most of the residents of Raksirang, where the literacy rate is very low, believe in Dhami Jhankri.

He, who is in the custody of the District Police Office, Makawanpur, said that 18 months ago he bought a pistol for 6,500 and three bullets for 900.

A father of 11 children, including 8 sons and 3 daughters, he currently lives at home with his mentally retarded daughter. Thokar's wife died 17 years ago. The sons are all separate.

'Thokar, who can even sign his own name, is surrounded by superstitions in the village that he is a witch, a fortune teller and a ghost. "They killed him because of that superstition," says Police Inspector Kurmi.

Police arrested Thokar on Friday evening while he was hiding in a nearby forest. A pistol, two rounds of bullets, a cartridge case and 190 grams of gun powder were recovered from him.
