A pickup jeep bearing the number Bagmati Province 01-002 Jha 6662 met with an accident at 6:15 pm on Tuesday in the hilly village of Hapni in Ichchakamana Rural Municipality-2. 80-year-old Bir Bahadur Praja Chepang of Hapni, who was seriously injured in the accident, died at 9:30 pm, said DSP Rabindra Khanal, spokesperson of the Chitwan District Police Office.
Ichchakamana Rural Municipality had provided the vehicle to the Hapni Agricultural Group with an 85 percent subsidy to transport agricultural produce. The vehicle, which is used to transport fruits and vegetables from the hilly region to the Fisling market on the Prithvi Highway, was named "Agricultural Ambulance" by the rural municipality. On Tuesday, while returning from Fisling after selling vegetables, the vehicle fell into a ravine about four to five hundred meters below the rural road in the hilly region, according to the police.
Karna Bahadur Praja Chepang, 38, and Bishnu Praja Chepang, 19, both from Hapni, who were in the vehicle, were injured. DSP Khanal said that Karna's condition is moderate and Bishnu's condition is normal. Both are being treated at a government hospital in Bharatpur.
Hapni village is a hilly area of Chitwan where the indigenous Chepang community is predominant. In recent years, the Chepang family here had earned a good income by growing vegetables. "Agricultural Ambulance" had helped in transporting local produce to the market at affordable rates. The vehicle was damaged due to the accident. The driver of the vehicle, Bikash Praja Chepang, 25, from Hapni, has been taken into custody by the police.
