Student and professor attraction increasing at Kathmandu University

Kathmandu University (KU) in Dhulikhel, a district-based university, has seen an increasing number of students and teachers. Kathmandu University has stated that it will add about 1,000 new students and 12 foreign professors in the current academic session (2082/83).

Last year, more than 5,000 students were admitted, and this year the number is expected to exceed 6,000, said the university's Vice Chancellor, Professor Achyut Prasad Wagle. According to him, this year, more than 300 new students have been admitted in engineering and more than 90 students in science compared to last year. Similarly, about 300 students are expected to be added in arts, management and education. He informed that preparations are underway to add more than 400 additional seats in medical sciences based on the approval of the National Medical Council. 

The university has not only attracted students but also foreign professors. The number of foreign professors has also increased significantly, said the university's Vice Chancellor, Dr. Wagle. According to him, 12 foreign professors have been appointed this year after receiving applications from more than 450 countries around the world. Wagle said that the university aims to increase the number of foreign professors to 10 percent in the near future. 

He also informed that the target is to fulfill the quota of foreign student admissions this year. Accordingly, 42 foreign students will be admitted to MBBS this year. The university has stated that 12 percent of the students who graduated from the university in the last three decades are foreigners. So far, about 5,660 students from 55 countries have graduated from the university. The university has also collaborated with more than 290 international academic and research-based institutions from 41 countries, the university said. According to the university's registrar, Dr. Rajiv Shrestha, the campaign to transform KU into an excellent educational center of international standard is underway.

KU has established its own information technology center and emphasized research and digital sustainability. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Wagle said that academic and administrative services will be provided to students digitally through the 'KU Connect' mobile app. The university has stated that KU, which is striving to be listed among the best universities in the world, has expanded its scholarship program to all seven provinces. Under which, 100 percent fee waiver will be given to the best students from each province, according to Vice-Chancellor Dr. Wagle.

Similarly, he said that the collaboration with Dhulikhel Hospital, which has been weak for some time, is becoming stronger again. According to him, the hospital service is being expanded in collaboration with the current Dhulikhel Hospital management. For that, a 450-bed hospital building is being constructed.
