More than 96,000 cattle were vaccinated against lumpy skin in Bagmati

Vaccination campaign against lumpy skin disease has been completed in 13 districts of Bagmati province. This campaign has saved thousands of cattle.

More than 96,000 cattle were vaccinated against lumpy skin in Bagmati

96 thousand 347 cows and buffaloes have been vaccinated across the province as part of the week-long vaccination campaign conducted by the provincial government for the prevention and control of lumpy skin disease which is rapidly spreading in Bagmati province.

Lumpy skin disease is characterized by the appearance of nodules or blisters on the skin of cows and buffaloes, high fever, decline in milk production, swelling of the body and weakness of the animal. Recently, this disease has spread rapidly in Chitwan district. In order to reduce the impact of this disease, the vaccination campaign was started from Lalitpur district and then the campaign was conducted in all 13 other districts, according to the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development of Bagmati Province, Madhusudan Paudel.

10,328 cows and buffaloes have been vaccinated in Sindhuli under the week-long vaccination campaign against lumpy skin disease. Similarly, 4 thousand 437 cattle have been vaccinated in Ramechhap, 4 thousand 350 in Kathmandu, 3 thousand 606 in Lalitpur, 1 thousand 543 in Bhaktapur, 6 thousand 51 in Dhading, 7 thousand 698 in Kavrepalanchok. Similarly, 7 thousand 724 in Nuwakot, 3 thousand 634 in Rasuwa, 9 thousand 982 in Dolakha, 6 thousand 284 in Sindhupalchok, 6 thousand 15 in Chitwan and 24 thousand 695 in Makwanpur have been vaccinated against lumpy skin disease.

According to the data of the ministry, the total number of cows in Bagmati province is 694 thousand 217 and the number of buffaloes is 549 thousand 182. Those animals have produced a total of 481 thousand 771 metric tons of milk annually. District-wise, the highest milk production is seen in Chitwan, where there are 92,256 cows and 72,200 buffaloes in seven local levels. Minister Paudel has said that the vaccination program which started as part of the week-long program is still ongoing.

In the financial year 2080/81, only 11 thousand 218 cows and buffaloes died due to lumpy skin disease in Bagmati province. During the same period, 37 thousand 89 cattle were infected and a total of 256 thousand 759 animals were directly or indirectly affected. According to the ministry, 245 thousand 222 cows and buffaloes have been vaccinated against Lumpy Skin Disease across the state.
