Hearing about the Bhotekoshi-5 project, concerns of the local residents that the settlement will be at risk

What you should know

The Bhotekoshi-5 hydropower project with a capacity of 46 megawatts, which is being prepared for construction in Bahrbise municipality of the district, has started the process after the public hearing. On Monday, the project affected people were gathered at Karvadahl of Bahrbise municipality and informed about their long-term plan after hearing.

According to the chairman of the project, Mohanvikram Karki, the project has been discussed and heard with the affected people of Bahrbise-3,4,5,8,9 and Tripurasundari Rural Municipality-3. "After hearing the demands and complaints of the locals, the project has finally moved forward, we have resolved the dispute and come to the discussion, now the project will move forward," he said.

When the new project is going to be built by putting a tunnel in the water coming out of the power house of the 102 megawatt Madhyabhotekoshi hydropower project, the locals had protested on the streets saying that it would have an environmental impact. Karki said that the starting point of the

project will be the Bhotekoshi 5 switchyard, which is about 3.47 km from the switchyard to the proposed Sunkoshi hub pulling station. The 400 kV double circuit transmission line will be the final point from the Sunkoshi hub pulling station to the Bahrbise substation of the Nepal Electricity Authority at a distance of about 1.3 km. The tunnel with a total length of 4.77 km (3.47 km plus 1.30 km) will be a double circuit. The voltage of the transmission line will be 220 kV and 400 kV. The proposed transmission line will have a total of 17 towers.

Locals worried

The power house of the project planned to be built by the Kalika Hydropower Company will fall on the border of Bahrbise Municipality and Balefi Rural Municipality. However, locals are worried that the use of river water through tunnels may disturb the environmental balance. In the

hearing, the locals of Bahrbise Bazar, Maneshwara, Ramche and other areas have warned that the project will not be allowed to proceed if their demands are not met. Vikesh Lama of Bahrbise Municipality-8 questioned the project saying that the project will destroy the soil here and dry up the river. "This project will put the housing at risk, the project will have to take responsibility for it, the affected people and the housing should be insured," he said. Along with Lama, local Om Tamang, Pradeep Poudel and others suggested the project.
