What you should know

From the point of view of health, getting pregnant at the age of less than 20 years is considered physically immature. The Civil Code, which came into effect from August 2075, provides that marriage cannot be done under the age of 20.

Although it is dangerous from the point of view of health and the latest law even prohibits marriage, about 13 percent of pregnant women are under the age of 20 within the Hetaunda sub-metropolitan area. This number is among those who come to health institutions for pregnancy tests.

If we look at the number of people who do not have access to health institutions and those who do not come to health institutions even if they have access, this ratio is sure to increase. According to Bhola Chaulagai, health worker of Hetaunda sub-metropolitan health branch, about 13 percent of the total pregnant women in the city area are under 20 years of age.

400 out of 3 thousand 320 pregnant women who underwent pregnancy test last year   2 people were found to be under 20 years of age. Mainly due to child marriage, they get pregnant at a young age.

In Hetounda Hospital, about 8 percent or 240 pregnant women under the age of 20 gave birth in AW 081/082. Last year, 3,229 people gave birth in Hetaunda Hospital. In the previous year, 3 thousand 349 people gave birth in Hetaunda Hospital. Among them, 245 were under the age of 20, said Haris Malla, the hospital's recorder.

Being pregnant at a young age poses a risk to both the pregnant girl and the unborn child. Hetaunda sub-metropolitan city has also made a solution plan for the problems seen in the urban area. According to Bhimprasad Timalsina, head of the social development division of Hetaunda sub-metropolitan city, efforts will be made to stop child marriage by mobilizing mothers' groups and children's clubs.

"Although the number of child marriages with parental consent is low, the number of forced marriages is significant," he said.
