Locals have warned that the settlement is at risk due to water leakage from the Bhotekoshi hydropower project under construction of 102 megawatt capacity in Bahrbise municipality area of Sindhupalchok.
According to Kul Bahadur Shrestha, Chairman of Bahrbise-6, on Monday, the affected locals, clubs, forest committee and others have drawn attention to the project officials about the risk. Locals have warned that if the project tries to forcefully produce electricity without addressing the demands of the locals, they will block the project.
Powerhouse at Bahrbise-5 and dam site at Bhotekoshi rural municipality-5 Chaku is being constructed . The affected residents say that the main tunnel of the long-awaited project, which is currently preparing to generate electricity, is leaking water from the main tunnel and all the areas outside the structure. "Locals have warned about the fear of the settlement being merged into Bhotekoshi," said the Ward President Shrestha.
The locals have demanded that the tunnel should be inspected and maintained by experts, there should be (A) class insurance for people, land, land and house property, and the community responsibility budget should be provided to the ward. Bahrbise Municipality Mayor Balkrishna Basnet, Armed Police Force Lamosanghu Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagat Bahadur Duwal and other security personnel and public representatives were present among the affected. The meeting and discussion was postponed for some time after the locals and the project parties could not reach an agreement on this dispute.
Before the 10th of August, a discussion and decision will be made in the presence of high-level project officials, local administration chiefs, security chiefs, federal and state parliamentarians, and public representatives. Water leaked from the borderland of the tunnel for the first time in 2080. After the water leak, the project took nine months to repair the tunnel . Since then, water leaked from the same place for the second time in 2081, and the tunnel was repaired by adopting retrofitting technology.
Even last June, when the project poured water into the tunnel, water leaked from the borderland for the third time . Even when the water is leaking in the tunnel, the locals have started to leave their homes and get displaced when the project is started for electricity generation . Sudeep Joshi, acting head of the
project, informed that the structure of the tunnel is stable and safe. Also, the fact that there is no risk to the settlements around the tunnel and in the upper part has been presented in the program.
Electricity generation is about to start in central Bhotekoshi with preparations to connect it to the national system through the Dhalkeshwar transmission line through the New Khimti 400 KV substation owned by the Nepal Electricity Authority. A 7.2 km tunnel has been dug from Chaku to Jambu for the project. If water leaks from the tunnel and explodes, more than a dozen thousands of households in Gati, Jambu, Khorsanibari, Khagdal, Bahrbise, Lamosanghu, Khadichaur will be at high risk.
