Political parties of Chitwan Madi have demanded the release of the farmer who was arrested after a rhinoceros was found dead in a paddy field due to electrocution.

A rare wild animal, a one-horned rhinoceros, was found dead in the paddy field of local Haribhakt Shrestha in Madi Municipality-2 Bhairavpur on Wednesday morning. Chitwan park administration has detained Shrestha to investigate the case of dead rhinoceros. The youth of Madi have also started protest demanding Shrestha to leave.

Conservation officer Avinas Thapa Magar, who is the information officer of Chitwan Park, said Shrestha was given five days to investigate. Because the rhino is a rare wild animal, the law prohibits killing it or transporting and trading its parts.

Information officer Thapa Magar says that after a rhinoceros was found dead after being electrocuted in a paddy field, Shrestha, the owner of the farm, was detained for investigation according to the law.

After the arrest of Shrestha, the political parties as well as the youth groups of Madi have demanded his immediate release. A protest was held at Madi Basantpur market and Baruwa market on Friday led by the youth of Madi.

In the press release issued by the political parties, it is mentioned that Haribhakt Shrestha cultivated paddy on the 10th bigha land in the belief that he should do something in Madi. It is said in the statement, "It is sad that the rhinoceros died after getting caught in the fence that he had put up to protect his own farmers. But the matter of detaining and prosecuting farmers who earn their livelihood by doing agricultural work has made us serious.

Chairman of Nepali Congress Madi Nagar Committee Kamal Nath Bhushal, UML President Narayan Prasad Adhikari and Chairman of Maoist Center Bharat Prasad Timilsina issued a joint statement.

Similarly, Rashtriya Swatantra Party Madi Nagar Committee Chairman Narayanadatta Rizal, Rashtriya Prajatantra Party Virendra Bahadur Bhandari and CPN United Samajwadi Chairman Puran Mahato are among those who issued a joint statement.

"We all political parties strongly demand the unconditional release of farmer Haribhakt Shrestha," the statement said. The parties have also drawn attention to discussing this incident and all the problems created by Chitwan Park through discussions with the Parks and the Ministry of Forests.
