Bagmati Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama has lost his status as the leader of the state Congress Parliamentary Party. 22 of the 37 MPs of the Congress signed the no-confidence motion against Lama in the division of votes held on Tuesday. Elections will be held on Wednesday to select the new leader of the party.

The Congress Provincial Performance Committee has formed a three-member election committee under the coordination of Provincial Joint Minister Harisharan Shrestha. In the election committee, the state joint general minister Rishiram Ghimire and Jeevan Dangol are members. The election committee has scheduled the publication of the voter list at 8 am on Wednesday and the voting time from 2 pm.

In the division of votes, only 15 people are seen in favor of Chief Minister Lama. Those who signed in favor of the no-confidence motion are Congress state president and state MP Indra Bahadur Baniyan. Earlier, in the election of the party leader held on 13 December 2079, Lama defeated Baniyan by 5 votes. Congress has 37 MPs in Bagmati. Both Chief Minister Lama and Baniyan are leaders close to Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

This time a no-confidence motion was filed against the registered Lama under the leadership of Baniyan. In Bagmati, five ministers of the Congress resigned for the change of Chief Minister. Since four ministers resigned on 9 July, Minister of Water Supply, Energy and Irrigation Shyam Bahadur Khadka also submitted his resignation on Tuesday. The four ministers who submitted their resignations earlier were dismissed by Chief Minister Lama.

Lama has said that he will not resign from the post of Chief Minister despite losing the status of the parliamentary party leader. "Even if the leader of the parliamentary party is removed, it does not mean that he should resign as the chief minister," he said.
