Prithviman Gurung, former head of Gandaki province and leader of Nepali Congress, has been cremated at Devghat according to Gurung rites.
According to the tradition and culture of the Gurung community, Gurung, who died on Saturday, was given a salute by the armed police after the last rites were performed by the religious leaders. Before that, the Congress paid homage on behalf of the party at his residence Bharatpur-26 Divyanagar. Congress Central Vice President Dhanraj Gurung came to Chitwan to pay homage to Gurung's body. He said that the demise of Gurung has not only damaged the Congress but also the country.
Congress Chitwan Chairman Rajeshwar Khanal informed that after paying tributes to Gurung at the party office Kamal Nagar, he was cremated at Devghat. Gurung, who had been struggling with cancer for a long time, passed away at the age of 76 on Saturday at his residence in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-26, Divyanagar, Chitwan. Gurung, who was born in 2006 in Lwanghalel of Kaski, made Chitwan his political home.
In the latter part of his political career, Gurung was the head of Gandaki province from July 2078 to February 2079. He maintained his fair and balanced image while in the role of provincial head.
Meanwhile, at the sad time of Gurung's death, Nepali Congress Chitwan has decided to close the party office for three days. Chairman of Congress Chitwan Khanal informed that it was decided to close the party's district committee and all 98 ward offices for three days and to lower the party flag at half mast for seven days at a meeting held on Sunday morning.
