Local residents have started a protest against the Bhotekoshi-5 hydropower project of 46 MW capacity, which is being prepared for construction in Bahrbise. Locals have protested against the plan to build a new project by tunneling the water coming out of the 102 MW Madhyabhotekoshi hydroelectric power plant, saying that it will have an environmental impact.
On Sunday, the locals of Bahrbise Municipality area protested in the market with black flags saying 'Go Back Kalika Hydro'. Residents of Bahrbise Bazar, Maneshwara, Ramche and other areas took out a protest rally and demanded the postponement of the project. The angry group also vandalized the chairs while disrupting the public hearing organized in the covered hall of the city. The protesters entered the hall shouting slogans and obstructed the proceedings.
The power house of the project to be built by Kalika Hydropower Company will be located on the border of Bahrbise Municipality and Balefi Rural Municipality. However, locals are worried that the use of river water through tunnels may disturb the environmental balance. Raju Shrestha, a local resident, said, 'There is a danger of erasing the identity of Bharbise Bazar if Bhotekoshi water is used through the tunnel. Therefore, there is no need for any hydropower project here.'
Currently, the public hearing for the environmental impact assessment of the project is being prepared.
