Three hours walk to fetch a garri of water

68-year-old Mangalsen Tamang of Bahrbise Municipality-9, Chulthe village of the district is forced to walk for three hours every day to carry one gallon of water. After the local springs dry up, he has to go to the stream below the village for water.

"It is difficult to bring water before the morning is over in the old age, but there is no other option. Rainwater used to be taped, but when the rain did not fall properly, that was not a solution,' Tamang expressed his pain.

After the 2072 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, most of the water sources here have started to dry up. After the small water sources around have completely dried up, the situation of Kakakul has started here .

Since there is no way to get water, the main water tank here has been completely empty since about seven months ago. Budhimari Tamang, a resident of Upper Chulthe village, said that the continuous drought has created a water crisis in the village. "There are roads and electricity, but it takes hours to get drinking water, and people get fed up, but what to do sir, the government doesn't see our plight," she said.  Three hours walk to fetch a garri of water 68-year-old Mangalsen Tamang . Photos: Anish / Kantipur

Like Mangalsen and Budhimai, 30 households living in Chulthe and Mathilla villages here are struggling for water for daily life. The local leader, 31-year-old Furbachiring Tamang, spent some time personally spending nearly 7 lakh rupees to draw water from the river and distribute it to the village.

Currently, he is drawing about 4,000 liters of water from time to time and distributing it from house to house. But he said that the long-term effort to draw water from the machine failed due to lack of funds.

"I requested the municipality about this problem many times, but it was ignored, I am tired of pleading about this," he said. The local residents are calling this initiative of Phurpa as a 'short-term relief' and are demanding a long-term solution.

They complain that there is no concrete initiative despite informing the municipality repeatedly. Due to the lack of water, the greens and vegetables grown in the fields here are going to dry up and spoil.

Locals who are hoping that rain will fall and their crops will grow green are currently in a desperate situation. In the upper part, more than 10 plantations of land have been kept barren . There is the same water shortage in Thotneri, Bhirkuna, and Dandabari in the lower areas.

The land in this area is now dry and almost barren. Before the 072 earthquake and aftershocks, the farmers here feel like a dream when they remember that millet, corn and many fruit plants were planted here. Krishna Bahadur Rayamazhi, the Ward President of Bahrbise Municipality-9, said that he was informed about the problem in Chulthe, which is known as a tourist village, and because the ward does not have enough budget, he is demanding a compromise at the upper level and Tapka.

"Other works are being done in a hurry in the ward, there is no normal budget for lifting to draw water permanently, now a big budget source is needed," he said.
