Traditionally celebrated since 1421 years, Hillejatra, which is believed to be Ia, has started in Panauti. According to tradition, it is believed that after two bamboos in the form of serpents were planted in the Punyamati river, the city deity (Duicha Nyakegu) poured water.

During this two-day Jatra, Bhadrakali's chariot is drawn at night. Gandu is worshiped and special homa is performed. On the day of Chaturdashi, all the deities of Panauti Nagar are worshiped in the temple. Especially, the city circumambulation is done carrying the khat of Maheshwar Ganesha on the east side of the Indreshwar Mahadev temple. The full moon day is the main highlight of the Jatra. On this day the chariots of Bhadrakali, Mahadev and Indreshwar are raced in the market and finally all the three chariots are pitted against each other . Hillejatra started in Panauti
