Ravi Thapa, the personal secretary of Wagmati Province Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Minister Madukumar Shrestha, committed suicide after the discussion of removing the problematic cooperatives from the file system came out. According to the police, he committed suicide on Monday night by consuming pesticide tablets placed on wheat.
Thapa Mantri Shrestha of Dhunibensi Municipality-9 of Dhading District belonged to Shrestha. It was revealed that Thapa committed suicide after the phone conversation he had with the Congress leader regarding Sumeru Saving and Credit Co-operative Limited, which was declared a problematic cooperative by the Cooperative Division under the Ministry of Cooperatives, where he was the personal secretary, was leaked. Apilraj Bohra, Superintendent of Police, Police Complex, Kathmandu, informed that Thapa had taken the poison at a friend's camp in Kalanki at 2 pm.
According to him, details of the incident of Thapa taking poison when no one was in the room have been received. When his brother reached the room, Thapa was found in an unconscious state and was taken to the Martyr Memorial Hospital in Kalanki for immediate treatment and the doctor declared him dead at 6:38 in the evening. A one-page letter has also been recovered from Thapa.
In the letter, it is mentioned that he was involved in the money transaction of the cooperative and that he was humiliated by it. An audio record of Thapa negotiating with Congress Dhading leader Raju Bertaula to remove the file of Sumeru, which has been declared as a cooperative, was released a few days ago. Bertaula, whose name was added to the audio record on the instructions of the Cooperative Minister, was arrested on Monday morning by filing a complaint with the police. Police said that in the audio recording found on social media, there was a conversation between Sumeru Cooperative's former secretary Binod Acharya, Congress leader Bertaula and minister's personal Thapa.
According to Cooperative Minister Shrestha, Thapa was on leave that day. He told himself that he had gone to Dhading for his daughter's birthday. 'I was a hetaunda that day. There was a news publication with a voice record online. Ravi's voice is also in the audio. I asked Raju Bertaula to be taken under police surveillance for spreading negative things about the ministry. He is also involved in that. He consumed poison out of fear', the minister said. Minister Shrestha said that in the suicide note he wrote in the
room, he wrote 'sorry brother' to Minister Shrestha. Minister Shrestha said that he committed suicide because he tried to trap him even though he did nothing wrong. The cooperative has also filed a writ in the Supreme Court against the decision of the ministry and obtained a short-term order. The Supreme Court has called both parties for discussion on the said cooperative.
