Chitwan Police have destroyed opium cultivation in hilly areas of Bharatpur Metropolitan City.

According to the Chitwan Police, 11 people under the command of Police Inspector Laxman KC of the District Police Office and nine under the command of Police Inspector Nirla Bhandari of the Muglin Area Police Office destroyed the opium plantation planted in 6 bighas.

"The police team climbed the hill on Saturday 10th of January and destroyed the opium planted there," said Chitwan District Police Office spokesperson DSP Ravindra Khanal. He said that after opium cultivation was found in Bhorle, Gourigaon, Hadigaon, Doreni and Chowkidanda areas of Ward No. 29 of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, they were torn up and destroyed. According to DSP Khanal, investigations are being carried out to determine whether cultivation has taken place elsewhere.

'We have destroyed all the farms seen now. We are looking to see if it happened elsewhere," he said. Such a farm was found in the hilly terrain 27 km north-east from the headquarters of Bharatpur. Although drug marijuana is cultivated in the remote hilly villages of the eastern region of Chitwan, a large amount of opium cultivation has been found near the headquarters, Bharatpur.
