Mayurdhap Industrial Area project stalled for years

Even though more than 25 crores have been spent after laying the foundation stone 8 years ago, the 'Mayurdhap Industrial Area' located in Hetaunda Sub-Metropolitan City-14 has remained idle. The construction work has been stopped because the Ministry of Forests and Environment has not approved the environmental impact assessment.

The then Industry, Commerce and Supply Minister Lekhraj Bhatt laid its foundation stone in 2073 with a plan to build one industrial zone in each of the seven provinces. The government planned to operate it within 077 .

The main reason for the stoppage of the construction work is because some land in the industrial area is within the Parsa National Park . Nikunj has not given permission to fence the land in the industrial area. For this reason, the environmental impact assessment has not been approved. Sangeeta Kunwar, Chief Engineer of Industrial Area Management Office, Hetaunda, said that due to the environmental impact assessment being approved, the infrastructure construction work of the industrial area could not proceed. President of Wagmati Province Industry Confederation and Hetaunda industrialist Lekhraj Pokheral said that due to lack of inter-ministerial coordination, the decision made by the Council of Ministers has been cancelled. The cabinet meeting on 14 Baisakh 073 decided to reduce its area and establish an industrial zone in 199.12 bighas. The project office was established from 075 October 5th. 62 industrial plots have been allocated within the

industrial area. The land is divided from 7 to 14 ropani in each allotted plot . According to the detailed study report (DPR), about 7 billion 234 million rupees will be invested for infrastructure construction. Even though the old DPR estimated it at more than 7 billion, it seems that the cost may increase . It is believed that about 20,000 people will get employment opportunities directly and indirectly from the various industries that will be established in the industrial area.

According to the environmental impact assessment report, there are a total of 50 species of birds and 13 species of reptiles in the industrial area. Besides, 14 of the species found in the area have been listed as endangered at the national and international levels. Out of which 9 are mammals, 2 are birds and 3 are reptiles.

Hetaunda Industrial Zone was established in 2020 with the help of the American government on 212 bighas. After 55 years, an industrial area was going to be established in about 200 bighas near Hetaunda Industrial Area.
