Reconstruction of flood-damaged Mandu Hydro Power accelerated

The reconstruction work of Mandu Hydro Power, which was damaged by the flood in Wagmati river due to incessant rains on October 11th and 12th, is being done at a fast pace.

After completing the reconstruction work of the hydro power which was damaged by the flood in the Wagmati River, the work is being done with the goal of producing electricity by next March. 95 technicians and workers have been working for the reconstruction of hydro power for a month. Senior technician Manoj Singh said that while the work of retrofitting the damaged power house is going on, the repair of the penstock pipe and the removal of sand and mud from the tunnel are going on. "We are doing maintenance work from early morning until late at night," he said.

The flood damaged the headworks, power house, penstock pipe and electricity tower of Mandu Hydro Power, which was producing electricity by keeping a production house in Bhimfedi Rural Municipality-8 Wagmati Dobhan in Makwanpur. Sundar Shrestha, chief operating officer, said that the flood caused more than 1 billion damage to Hydro Power, which has been producing 22 megawatts of electricity since 2075. "The flood in Wagmati caused unimaginable damage to the hydropower, we are also repairing it," he said. The road leading from Sisneri market to the project site was damaged by the flood. Mandu Hydro has opened the way to reach the project site by repairing the road. Out of 600 meters of penstock, 100 meters of penstock pipes were damaged by the flood in Wagmati River. "Penstock pipe work is also being done," said Technician Singh, "The 2,424-meter-long main tunnel was damaged by sand and silt, and sand and silt removal is underway."

The water of Wagmati river flowing from Kathmandu was generating electricity from the power plant at Bagrabensi in Bhimfedi rural municipality-8 Ipapanchkanya of Makwanpur.

Mandu Hydro Power Company of the private sector and a Chinese company jointly invested electricity from the water of Bagmati. Mandu Hydro Power Company with the help of Siichwang Heichwang Chinese Company started the construction work of Bagmati small hydropower project from June 2072 with an investment of four billion. The project was inaugurated on Chait 19, 2075. Vagmati and Kogati water was produced by creating a 10 to 13 meter high bar (dam) in Ipapanchkanya Dovan and taking it through a tunnel to the power house at Bagrabensi in Ipapanchkanya.

A 55-meter-long bar (dam) constructed in Wagmati has been damaged by the flood. 12.4 cusecs of water per second flows through the tunnel through the dam. The power house (power house) is at a distance of 2,440 meters from the dam constructed in Wagmati. The site for digging tunnels, building dams, and installing penstock pipes was constructed by the Nepali technicians and Nepalese workers of the said Hydro Power.

The Mandu Hydropower Company had an agreement with the Nepal Electricity Authority to sell the produced electricity at 4 rupees 40 paisa per unit during the rainy season and at 8 rupees 40 paisa per unit in winter.

The substation of Kulekhani I is located at a distance of 13 and a half kilometers from the power house of the said project. 42 towers have been constructed to deliver the generated electricity to the substation of Kulekhani I. Among them, 2 towers were damaged by flood. "We are not working on the reconstruction of the tower now, we are working on the repair of the power house, tunnel, penstock pipe and headworks," said Technician Singh.
