Encroachment on Barseni forest is increasing in Wagmati province. The forest area is decreasing with the increase of encroachment, according to the data of the Ministry of Forestry and Environment of the state government. According to the data, the most encroachment is taking place in Sindhuli compared to 13 districts of the province.
According to the data of Forest Directorate Hetaunda, 12 thousand 946.79 hectares of forest area has been encroached on in 13 districts. According to the data of the last financial year 2080/81, Sindhuli has the highest encroachment of 6 thousand 404.87 hectares of forest while Bhaktapur has zero encroachment.
Although the government has put forward various plans to reduce encroachment every year, this situation has arisen because they have not been fully successful. Since the past, most of the forest area has been encroached by people. Forest officer Aryal said that after the federalization, i.e. from 2074, the local levels are encroaching more during the construction of buildings and other infrastructure structures including sports fields.
3 thousand 556.96 hectares in Makwanpur, 1 thousand 688 hectares in Chitwan, 495.05 hectares in Ramechhap, 246.96 hectares in Dhading were encroached by Govind Aryal, Forest Officer of Forest Directorate Hetaunda. According to Aryal, 258 hectares in Kavrepalanchok, 93.94 hectares in Nuwakot, 78.90 hectares in Sindhupalchowk, 44.84 hectares in Dolakha, 36.27 hectares in Rasuwa, 30 hectares in Lalitpur and 12 hectares in Kathmandu have been encroached.
Forest Director Vidyanath Jha informed that 42.26 hectares of forest area has been freed from encroachment and the forest area has been re-established due to encroachment of around 13,000 hectares of forest area in Wagmati Province by various means. He said that 17.10 hectares of Dolakha, 9 hectares of Chitwan, 6.74 hectares of Kathmandu, 1 hectare each of Lalitpur and Bhaktapur and 0.51 hectares of encroached land in Makwanpur have been maintained as forest areas.
He claims that encroachment can be minimized and the encroached land and forest area can be maintained only through the activities of the provincial ministry, local level, district administration office, division forest, police etc.
53.73 percent of the total area in the province is forest area. Out of which, the number of community forests is 4,534. Community forests cover an area of 425,413 hectares. There are 3,336 confessional forests, 673 private forests, 49 religious forests and two protected forests in the province.
