What you should know

In Chitwan, which is considered as the capital of poultry production, only about 18 thousand metric tons of chicken meat is produced annually. Most of the products here go to districts outside the capital, Kathmandu, while some are imported.

There is no organized slaughterhouse in the district where such big meat is bought and sold. Bharatpur has not decided the land for the slaughterhouse which is an essential infrastructure within the metropolis. They have been slaughtering for meat in their own way in the shop without checking the health of the animals in the organized slaughterhouse. There is no regular monitoring of such meat shops.

Animal Nepal, a non-governmental organization working in the field of animal welfare, has repeatedly drawn the attention of the metropolitan city for organized slaughterhouses. But the metropolis has not yet been able to implement the construction of the slaughterhouse. According to the representatives of Animal Nepal, animals are slaughtered for meat, especially buffaloes, in an open place on the river bank.

'Those who see that will hardly eat meat . After seeing buffaloes being slaughtered after vomiting, we have repeatedly drawn the attention of the metropolis for the construction of organized animal slaughterhouses,' said Animal Nepal's Chitwan Coordinator Ramchandra Acharya.

Although a committee was formed under the coordination of Deputy Mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City Chitrasen Adhikari, the work has not progressed . Two years ago, under the coordination of Deputy Mayor Chitrasen Adhikari, a systematic animal slaughterhouse construction committee was formed. The deputy mayor also admits that the animal slaughtering place in the metropolis was found in a state of disrepair. Let's not talk about the condition of the animal slaughterhouse, it is a mess. The situation in which animals were slaughtered 40/50 years ago is still the same," said the deputy mayor official.

He said that the metropolis did not get the land for the construction of the slaughterhouse. At least five/seven bigha of land is required. Even though it is far away from the city center, the slaughterhouse does not operate. So much land is not available in the center of the market. We are searching," the official said. He said that in terms of environment, it is not possible to keep rivers and streams under cover.

Officials told that there is opposition when they are kept in the slums too. It has been difficult to get land. It is said to make a slaughterhouse, but it is a very difficult job . We are for  . Let's hope it will happen," said the deputy mayor official. He said that there is no budget problem after getting the land. He said that if the land is found, it will be brought to the metropolis or if it is insufficient, the provincial and federal budgets will also be brought. Not only in the metropolis, there is no slaughterhouse in Chitwan.

Chitwan is the main area of chicken production. Fish and crabs, goats are also abundantly produced here . But there is no organized slaughterhouse in the district yet. According to the information received from Animal Services Office Chitwan Bharatpur, 13 thousand 150 metric tons of chicken and duck meat were produced in the district last financial year. 2 thousand 848 tons of buffalo meat, 1 thousand 4 hundred 5 tons of goat and sheep were produced. According to the data of the office, 185 metric tons of pig meat was produced. Similarly, the office has informed that 4 thousand 679 tons of fish are produced.

"During market monitoring, meat shops are also monitored, regular monitoring is done during festivals when fish and meat are consumed more,"  Information Officer of Animal Services Office Chitwan Dr. Savina Mishra said. She said that considering the situation of production and consumption, there is a need for abattoir in Chitwan.

The Animal Slaughterhouse and Meat Inspection Act 2055 stipulates the appointment of meat inspection inspectors and such inspectors appointed by the department will look at the health condition of slaughtered animals and the quality of the meat produced from them, and only such meat can be sold to consumers from meat shops. But Chitwan does not have a slaughterhouse, nor has a meat inspection inspector been appointed.

'Animals cannot be slaughtered at the slaughterhouse. Only healthy animals can be slaughtered after completing the process. All kinds of animals and meat cannot be kept together. It is a pity that there is no organized slaughterhouse in a place like Chitwan,' said Acharya, coordinator of Animal Nepal.
