'It is enough to sell two goats a year to buy pulses and rice'

”Nowadays, children say that noodles, bhujiya, and spicy food cost a lot of money. That's how we should do it as long as we can.”

'It is enough to sell two goats a year to buy pulses and rice'

What you should know

My mother used to herd goats since I was in the womb. So it doesn't matter that I was also a goat herder from the womb. I used to go to the forest with my mother to graze goats from the age of 6 after I was born. Since then, I have been herding goats continuously for as long as I can remember. Once, I grazed 76 goats by myself.

I was born in 2007. I am now old. I still raise 13 goats. The number of goats keeps increasing and decreasing. My wife, who used to support me, has passed away.

Now I have a son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Until now, I have been supporting my family by selling goats. We don't need anything more than this. I sell two to three goats a year. One goat earns 16 to 21 thousand. I also sell young goats and goats. If it is one color, I earn 10-12 thousand by selling one goat. Even if it is not one color, it still earns 7-8 thousand.

From this, I am still able to buy spices, oil, rice, salt and fried food. A 50 kg sack of rice costs more than 3,500. Being a villager, I don't have to buy vegetables. The money I sell two goats a year is enough to buy pulses and rice. When guests visit, during weddings, and during festivals, I spend a little more. At such times, I have to record money in the account. At least 250 had to be recorded. Now, the custom of walking for more than half an hour has disappeared. I have to go to a tamp. That also costs a lot.

When uncles, cousins, extended family, and other guests come, it costs a lot. I have to slaughter a rooster. My daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren come. Even if they are from the house, I have to give them tika and give them dakshina. I spend a lot on small things that are not seen or cared about. As long as the body supports it, it is being carried out like this. No one sees the future coming. Earlier, it was the custom to walk. It was the custom to cultivate it yourself and store rice for the year. Money transactions were less. Such days disappeared. Expensive days came.

My pasture is Dhuseni Bhir. I graze around the Mechi highway. Sometimes I even take it down to the banks of the Tamor river. It takes five/six hours to reach there and return. We are a family of four/five. If we raise three goats and five/six goats a year alone, it is enough. But we cannot live alone. We cannot live alone, we need friends. We have sons and grandchildren as friends. Nowadays, children spend a lot on noodles, bhujiya, and chatpata. This is how we do it as long as we can. If I can't do something, my children, grandchildren, and sons-in-law also look after it.

The cage should be made strong for goat farming. When the weather is good, I graze the goats. The meat of the goats raised on pasture is delicious. Buyers are also happy to pay for it. During the rainy season, you have to keep them in the cage and put grass in it. Cutting grass and putting it in it is not as easy as grazing. The animal will become as accustomed as you make it. If you take care of it, it will also provide you with an income that is sufficient for you. For those of us who live a normal life and have no other way of earning, the expenses and income until we can make ends meet are a lake.
