'The roads here, the markets here, and the customers here have made my hard work sweet'

My ancestral home is Jumla. I migrated to Tikapur in Kailali thinking that I could do something. But I can't stay in one place. I came to Dadeldhura to do business because I had to do something to support my family. The roads here, the market here, and the customers here have made my hard work worthwhile. It has been 22 years since I started coming to Dadeldhura for itinerant business.

Now I am 45 years old. With age comes increasing responsibility. That responsibility has taught me to work. I have to continue my children's education. Family expenses are also increasing. When I think about such things, I worry about my own future. But I never feel weak in any situation. I knew that I could be proud of the wealth I earned through sweat, not by selling my parents' property. My studies were not very good. I left school and started struggling to make a living. I understood what business, loss, profit, trust, patience and hard work are.
Sometimes I think, 'If I had been able to study, I would have taken a government job.' But then I remind myself - 'Karma brought me here, this is my destiny.'

Earlier, I used to trade horses with my brother in the village. The business was doing well. Sometimes there was a loss. When the loss started increasing, I chose a new path. My brother is in the same business. I, on the other hand, started doing itinerant business. We are all together. Fourteen members live in the same house. Food is cooked on the same stove. But the responsibility of earning sometimes takes you far.
The situation is the same now as it was when I started my itinerant business. I was neither able to move forward in a hurry, nor did I fall behind. I am making ends meet. I have no debt, so I am satisfied.

Earlier, I used to go from house to house carrying goods like carpets, blankets, linen, curtains, and fibers. Now, it has been 5 years since I started selling ‘ready-made’ clothes. I go to the village and market carrying jackets, sweaters, hi-necks, and trousers. Even though the business has changed, my hard work has not decreased. Only the seasons change.

I live in a room in the market three kilometers away from the district headquarters, paying 2,000 for a month. I eat breakfast and dinner at a hotel for 500 a day. I spend 100-200 on tea and breakfast in the morning. I spend about 20,000 a month on food and snacks. Sometimes I eat meat too. I work hard to eat sweets. I wander around the market from 7 am to 8 pm. If I run around for a month, I earn around 50 thousand. My savings are around 20-25 thousand.

New traders sell goods in cash. Old acquaintances lend me half the amount. So if I have to go to Kathmandu, I have to bring goods worth lakhs at once. I cannot go to Kathmandu repeatedly. I have to sell the goods and repay the loan.

I also have to deal with the customers in a friendly manner. Many customers are happy when I bring the goods to their homes. Some do a lot of bargaining. I try to sell everyone at the same price. Today, I don't think that taking an extra profit of 50/100 rupees will make the business run. I go to Bagbazar, Tufandanda, Kirtipur, Khalanga, Tundikhel for business. I don't go to the villages much, because I find many customers in the market.

Clothes of all seasons are sold in Dadeldhura. Business is good from Dashain-Tihar to Falgun-Chait. At that time, there are a lot of people from morning to evening, and there are also a lot of customers. Sometimes, if I get time, I go home. I stay with my family for 10-15 days and then return to Dadeldhura for business.

22 years of experience has taught me that ‘you can earn money by working in the country’. Many choose to work abroad. I also thought about going abroad in the meantime, but I didn’t dare. I decided to do something on my own soil.
