”There are no such big expectations in life. If you can buy salt and oil, then it's enough. If you have rice and lentils or one of the vegetables in your meal, then it's enough. You don't need both vegetables and lentils. There's no color in your clothes. If you're not naked, then it's enough.”
What you should know
My home is Ammarpur, Isma Rural Municipality-6. I am 26 years old now. My mother, Dhankumari Kumal, and I are the only ones living at home. My father runs his household by farming in other people's houses in Arghakhanchi. I have to support myself and my mother.
I could not study properly . Born in a poor family, I studied only up to class 8 . Now it is the time for belauti (ambar). Our village grows mangoes in abundance . I sell these to buy salt .
Earlier, mother and son used to go to fairs to meet the household expenses . Now, I earn 200 to 300 rupees daily by selling mangoes . All this is an advantage . Because, I don't have to buy mangoes I fell and injured my back when I was little. After that, I am like a cripple. I can't do the work like others. I get a daily wage of 300 rupees. I don't always work. Sometimes there is work at fairs in the village. I only work at those times. My mother also works at fairs. We earn a small income by selling fairs and mangoes. I am satisfied with this. They look for us during the work season in the village. And they give us work as daily wage workers. When we do a lot of work, even a little money accumulates. I bought a smart phone by saving the money left over from that fair. I bought a phone after hearing that others use Facebook. Now I also open Facebook. I want to have fun using Facebook. I have heard that others have fun on Facebook. There is nothing that big of an expectation in life. If you can afford to buy salt and oil, it will be fine. If you have rice and lentils or vegetables in your meal, it will be fine. You don't need both vegetables and lentils. There is no color in your clothes. If you are not naked, it will be fine. I don't even imitate others. My mother and I wear ordinary clothes.
My father is responsible for raising my mother and me. But my father is there for the name. He doesn't look at us. He is there to say no, but he is not in our lives. We don't have any help. Just take care of yourself. My mother and I have made ends meet through happiness and sorrow. After attending the fair, the household expenses are met. During Dashain and Tihar, I can buy salt and oil by selling mangoes. I am satisfied with this.
I now live here on the road selling mangoes. People who walk here and there stop. I feel happy when I buy mangoes. I sell a small pack of mangoes for 50 rupees and a large pack for 100 rupees. After saving money, there is no problem of salt and oil at home. This is what makes me happy.
Even if I could not study, if I were not disabled, I would have gone abroad and earned money like others. But when I was young, I fell and got injured on the road. My back hurt. And I got better. But I can't walk like before. And I have a permanent back problem. Now I can't do anything. My back hurts. That's why I do the work I do at the fair and sell mangoes like this to support my family.
